TTM Return - Howard Johnson

Kind of weird that NRP makes an appearance and then I get back a TTM… FINALLY! Hopefully there is not a disappearance from us like that again.

But any who, got this HoJo, Ho-Joe, Hoe Joe, however you spell his “nick-name” today and it only took over a year! Sent it in June of last year, but hey, at least I got it back. I can’t complain too much.

I’m not entirely sure if there is even a card of him in a Rockies uni, but if there is I did not have one and this is the closest I have of him with his time as a Rockie (well before I guess).

The main reason why I sent this card to HoJo is that I have fond memories of running home from school to watch the first ever game of the Colorado Rockies against, none other than the N.Y. Mets. Since I was a fan, well still am, of the Baltimore Orioles (since there wasn’t a Colorado MLB team at the time) I didn’t pay attention much to the National League, except for all the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs telecasts from TBS and WGN back then. From watching those games, the majority of the games that I got to see on TV, I remember getting to know who the Howard Johnson was playing their rivals. So I was so damn happy to see that the Rockies would sign the almighty HoJo in ’94. But I do admit now, I don’t recall what he did when he did suit up for the Rockies… Oh well, still makes me happy!

TTM Return - John Maine

The mailbox has been empty lately, as far as TTMs go anyway, but today the mail-person finally brought goodness in.

I honestly did not know that Maine was signed by the Rockies until I was following a spring training game on MLB.com’s gameday and his name popped up. So I went to my card storage and dug out some of his cards, which I sent out the next day (3/11). I only had the below card of him in an Orioles uni but hey, at least I had one, and what better card to get signed than his prospect card?! (good thing I got it back)…

Now all I need is a Val Majewski address to send to and get the other half of the card signed :D

Back With Some Packs!

I finally found a scanner/printer that fits my needs and just in time for the ’11 season!

I also had to pick up some stuff from target so I figured why not pick up some retail packs. I decieded to pick up 4 packs of 2011 Topps, 4 packs of 2011 Opening Day and 2 packs of 2011 Heritage.

Now I’m not sure what to do with this card. If you look above the ‘B’ of the signature you’ll notice an orange circle like smudge. It looks like it got ‘ripped’ in the sticker laying process. Should I contact Topps about this, or should I just be happy that I got this from a retail pack?? What are your experiences?

Little Help Please

Since my scanner took a dump and I can't do any card posts without pics, this is off topic from cards... Well, kind of...

I was not watching the ALCS; rather I was listening to it because I was painting something for the man cave of mine.
Although I wasn’t watching the game I was listening to it on the radio, and how I wish I would have been watching it rather than listening to the fat fuck Jon Miller mumbling his asshole voice of words… Sorry, went off topic… did I hear correctly that Kerry Wood came into the game as a relief pitcher for the, *ugh*, Yankees??? Is that same Wood that started for the Cubs, and at a time was a badass years ago?
Any help would be appreciated; I’m too lazy to look it up and the assholes being Jon Miller and Joe Morgan did not say…

I was just wondering because it would be something to keep in mind for a TTM, that’s if he signs… (Damn I need to get up to date on where players are nowadays).

Pre-Blog TTM Sunday - Kevin Ritz

Kevin Ritz pitched for the Rockies from 1994 to 1998 with 39 wins and 38 loses; he also pitched for the Detroit Tigers from 1989 to 1992 with 6 wins and 18 loses. His career numbers are: 45-56, 5.35 ERA, 2 SV, 848 H, 485 H, 448 ER, 69 HR, 462 SO, .287 AVG and a 1.63 WHIP.

Ritz had 17 wins in 1996 for the Rockies, which set the Colorado Rockies franchise record. In 1999, Pedro Astacio tied Ritz with 17 wins of his own, therefore tied Ritz in wins for the Rockies franchise wins in a season. The record stood until Ubaldo “The Chief” Jimenez broke it with his 18^th win early in September of the 2010 season.

If anyone has the address to send a card to Astacio, please let me know. That would be awesome!

Flashback Friday - Metal Works

In 1997 Pinnacle released a set of cards called Xpress. And within the set were insert cards that were called Metal Works. I think I got my Metal Works cards from a grab box or something because when I got these cards they were so badass to me that I researched them, this is what I remember…

You had the chance to get the “card” in the bronze, silver, or gold variation, with 20 cards per the insert set. The silver and gold were serial, Silver was serial to 400, gold to 200, and bronze did not have a serial number…

And that’s all I remember. I know, shame on me, but the reason I bring up these cards is to hopefully have someone that knows all about them to tell me more, other than they are heavy as shit for a card.

The cards below, which are the bronze version, are the only ones I have of the set, so if you have or know where to get the rest, please! Let me know, I would love to have them all in my collection… I don’t even know the rest of the players in the set, that’s how little I know about these cards right now.

I assume most collectors would not like this, but I totally dig the oxidation on the Bagwell “card”, and no, it did not have it when I got the card. How cool is that?

1 Pack 2010 A&G 12 cards Target buy

So I was out at Target last night and picked up a pack of cards, nothing special just a A&G 12 pack. Below you will find the cards that laid inside.

The first card out of this pack was a card with Judson Laipply, if you go to YouTube and type in "Evolution of Dance" his video will pop up. He dances through 32 songs and 32 dance styles dating from 1953-1999.

The Next card pulled is of Tiago Della Vega, he holds a Guinness record for fastest guitar player, playing "The Flight of the Bumblebee" at 320 BPM (beats per Minute).

The last insert card I got, was of course a tobacco card. It is Helios from the Lords of Olympus line.

Now to get into the good stuff. Well this time the not so good stuff.

Pre-Blog TTM Sunday - Tim Salmon

I said in the past that I send cards to get signed from former and present Orioles and Rockies players, but I also send cards to get signed to players that I remember and enjoyed watching in the past. In this case I sent a card to the almighty Tim Salmon… And this card only took a year and two months to make its way back to me!

I’m sharing this card in hopes of breaking my drought of not receiving a TTM in over two months, this being the most recent card that I have got back signed in the mail since my drought has started.

So hopefully my mailbox is full this week!

Flashback Friday - Classic Calling Cards

Back in the 90’s when baseball cards were all the craze, there was another craze going on, calling cards. At least calling cards seemed like a craze to me, you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing them for sale. So, with any big things, why not combine them?

Well, that’s exactly what Classic did in 1996; they teamed up with 7-11 convenience stores and produced calling cards featuring major league baseball stars. The announcement stated that there was going to be 12 cards in the series with the first card being released the first week of June, featuring Cal Ripken Jr. The other June releases were: Frank Thomas, Hideo Nomo, and Jeff Conine. In July they released the cards of Ken Griffey Jr., Greg Maddux, Wade Boggs, and Ivan Rodriguez. The conclusion of the calling cards series was in August and consisted of Barry Bonds, Kirby Puckett, Mo Vaughn, and the last being Tony Gwynn.

The cards came in clear plastic wrappers (that’s why the scans are kind of strange looking) and my dad was able to maneuver the piece of paper that they put in along with the card to block the pin number on the back so he could use the cards without opening them up. I have no idea who he called with them but whatever, I just wanted the cards:

Pre-Blog TTM Sunday - Adam Jones

This was one of my first TTM successes and it took a little under a month to get back. Is there anything better than an Allen & Ginter signed card? I mean the cards are absolutely beautiful when signed. I have to be honest with you, this is the only reason I purchase A&G, because I love the way the actual baseball cards look. I also have to be honest with you and say that I hate card sets that have nothing to do with baseball, but I know a lot of you like the non-baseball cards in the set, so to each their own.

All I got to say is holy sheep shit do I love A&G signed cards!

Am I wrong?

Flashback Friday - Cracker Jack Cards

Oh how I miss the days when Cracker Jack had toy’s/prizes that actually excited me. I remember the days when I was younger and Cracker Jack had actual toys in the boxes instead of crap trivia cards for 4 year olds nowadays (are 4 year olds even supposed to be eating Cracker Jack?). But anyhow, what I remember most about Cracker Jack after they had actual toys for their prizes is when they had baseball cards!

I’m sure everyone has at least heard of these cards, but just in case you haven’t, here is a comparison:

Now this was in 1991 when I remember the cards came out, maybe they came out before that, but this is what I remember.

The photos below are of series one, which was a set of 36, I have no idea if they came out with series two because all I have are these cards from ‘91…

Then came 1992 and Cracker Jack continued to include baseball cards in their delicious snack, which also included 36 cards in the set, this time of the Donruss flavor:

Now I know they had a series 1 and series 2 of this set because I have some of both, here is series 2 (also 36 in the set):

Series 2 had a red back border rather than blue from series 1.

I think I stopped enjoying Cracker Jack because they didn’t have cards in their snack anymore, but I must have noticed that in 1997 they started it up again because this is a card from when they started back up with their card prizes, but there was only 20 cards in the set rather than the 36 from the years ago, and they must have wanted to save some money by going on their own and not joining up with a card company that made regular sized cards, because as you can tell, there is no team logos and there is no mention of a card company:

Cracker Jack also gave you the opportunity of purchasing one of these bad boys for a small fee:

It was just like having the normal binder, but for the small, Cracker Jack cards. The only problem was you could not add pages (like I needed them anyway):

As you can tell from the photos above, I do not have all of the Cracker Jack cards, so if anybody that reads this has any of the cards from the sets for trade, please let me know, I would love to collect all the cards from all the sets.

Where Are They Wednesday

Jose Lind, name sound familiar? More than likely you have never heard this name before. Well Lind was a second basemen in the MLB, that’s right he played in the majors. Seen as a Future star Lind started his MLB career with the Pittsburg Pirates (1987-1992) at the age of 23. In 1987 (rookie year), Lind played in 35 games, with 143 at bats with 46 hits and 0 home runs. His rookie year batting average was .322, giving him a Golden Golve for his outstanding performances at second base. After Lind played for the Pirates he then went over to Kansas City to play for the Royals (1993-1995). Lind now 29 and five years into his MLB career, played in 136 games, with 431 at bats, 107 hits and 0 homeruns. His batting average dropped to .248. Sometime during this point of his career Lind started using cocaine, he left the Royals during the ’95 season when his wife filed for divorce. The California Angels (1995) put a claim on Lind, having him on the rosters to finish the ’95 season as a reserve. 1995 was the last year Lind would play in the Major Leagues, finishing his career with a .254 batting average.

Linds life began to get a little crazy after his ’95 final season. Police were called to the home of his ex-wife, in July 1996, when Lind was in violation of a restraining order. The situation escalated to physical violence, which was witnessed by his daughters, Lind was later arrested for cocaine possession charges and pled guilty in February of 1997. On November 21, 1997, highway police in Tampa, Florida stopped Lind for leaving the scene of an accident. They discovered that he was visibly intoxicated, and that he had been driving while naked from the waist down. A search of his car revealed seven cans of beer and one gram of cocaine. Lind ended up spending a year in jail.

So where is Jose Lind now? Last seen in the baseball circuit as a player/coach for the Bridgeport Bluefish in 2006, received a full time manager position in 2003 then was replaced by Dave LaPoint in 2006. More recent sighting was in 2009 when Lind won a Latin Grammy for his bachata single "Quiero Yuca con bacalao y cebollita".

On The Way Out TTM

So, I'm sending Rob Ducey a card to sign tomorrow. If you didn't follow Ducey while he played in the Majors, he started out with Toronto in 1987 played for 13 seasons (around the league) and ended his career with the Expos in 2001. He has 1279 career at bats but just 31 home runs, his career bating average was .242.

This is going to be my first ever TTM so I'm hoping for a good turn out. I will post as soon as the card returns with the stats.

Pre-Blog TTM Sunday - David Nied

And here is my other Nied story,

Back in the early-mid 90’s I went to a lot of Colorado Springs Sky Sox games. While I was at one of the games, or should I say before the game started, I went to the field behind the stadium to shag some balls that went over the fence. After hunting some balls down I decided to head back to the gates before they opened so I could score some autos when the players took the field. So as I started to make my way back to the gates I came upon the grounds crew shed and I noticed some guys playing ping pong. When I got closer I noticed that they were ball players, and when I got even closer I noticed that one of the players was none other than David Nied! (He was in a rehab stint) I decided to stick around the shed and wait till they were done to see if I could get Nied’s auto. After a few minutes of watching them play the other guy must had to go warm up so he took off, and at that moment Nied turned around and asked if I wanted to play for a little bit. I said “sure, but I’ve never played before” as to which he replied “that’s okay, I’ll show you”. He told me the basic rules of the game and off we went, it only lasted a few minutes because some guy, I’m assuming a coach, popped his head in the door and said “it’s time”, I have no idea what he meant but Nied did, and said to me “sorry buddy, game is cut short”.

Well to cut the story short, I was so on top of the world that I got to play and mingle with a big leaguer that I actually forgot to ask for his auto!! Can you believe it?! The only reason I stuck around the shed was to get Nied’s autograph and I forgot!

So here it is 16-17 years later and I finally got it…

By the way, that was the first and only time I’ve ever played ping pong.

Saturday Mailday

So after the long wait to receive my Topps redemption the day has finally come. I originally submitted my redemption in May of this year, and got the card today (Saturday, 18 Sep, 2010). My card is a Craig Clark Bowman auto numbered 262/500.

Finally after four months of waiting I get my card.

p.s. sorry for crappy scan, tried 4 times and this is the best I could get.

Flashback Friday - 1993 Topps Gold

I have to admit that I really don’t know much about these cards. All I remember is that I had to have the David Nied gold card. Well, I eventually did get the Nied card and I was thrilled. But then came the day that my sister had “friends” over and the next day when I was looking through my cards I noticed that a card was missing, from the book that they were looking through, sure enough it was my prized card. We did try to get the card back but the person was never seen again. Thankfully my dad pulled the card again weeks later and he gave it to me. With my lesson learned it has never left my sight again, hehe. I know that Nied never panned out for the Rockies, but it was my home state’s first big league team and he was the first player for the Rockies expansion draft, so yeah.

I have more than the three cards pictured below, but these are the only ones that I knew I had from memory. I’m currently trying to build my database so I can log all my cards but that is going more slowly than I had planned.

So let the good times (and in my case the moment of bad time) roll…

I actually don’t know how many gold cards were in the set, one of every base card? If somebody knows the info, please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated.

Where are they Wednesday?

So when CPD and I came up with the idea to do a where are they Wednesday I threw the name Jeter out there. I am sure CPD cringed at the sound of the name, but he knows that Jeter has been around for quite some time. For those of you who haven't heard the name Jeter he is a shortstop for the N.Y. Yankees (I hope you know some baseball facts). He is a 36 year old from Pequannock, NJ. He was drafted by the N.Y. Yankees in the first round (sixth pick) in 1992.

Jeter started off in the Gulf Coast minor league spending 4 years there, only before advancing to the class-A Greensboro Hornets in '92 only to struggle with a .202 batting average.

In 1994, Jeter played for the class-A advanced Tampa Yankees, the double-A Albany-Colonie Yankees, and the Triple-A Columbus Clippers, hitting .344 with 5 home runs, 68 RBIs and 50 stolen bases. He was awarded the Minor League Player of the year award.

In his Major League career he is the all-time hits leader among shortstops and his .317 career batting average through 2009 is the 5^th highest among active players. He has hit 234 career home runs in his 15 years with the Yankees.

He has been in 11 American League All-Star games; Jeter has won 5 World Series championships since being a Yankee.

I think it is safe to say that Jeter has been the best shortstop in the AL East. Where is he today? Why still playing for the Yankees of course, still acting as team Capitan, and still bringing home the big cheese ($22,000,000).

I think another amazing SS is going to be Troy Tulowitzki but I won't touch this subject. I'll leave that for CPD and another day.

On The Way Out TTM

Boy was I surprised when I was watching the D-Backs – Rockies game the other day and the announcers said that Mike Hampton was warming up in the bullpin for AZ. I actually had to rewind the ol DVR just to make sure I heard them right. He never made it into the game so I didn’t get to see if it was actually the Mike Hampton that pitched for the Rockies a time ago. I also meant to hop on the internet after the game to see if it was him, but forgot. So when I was watching the next day’s game and he came in, sure enough it was the Mike Hampton that I remember.
I could have sworn I had a card of him in a Rockies jersey, but I was wrong so I’ll give this one a try…

I just got to keep my fingers crossed that this will be quick because I'm still in a huge slump for TTM successes :(

2010 Topps 206 Target Blaster Break

So I was out and about on Friday and decided to stop by target and grab a few blasters that they had. I happened to grab the last box of 2010 Topps 206, and the last box of 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter from their shelf. On the drive home I was thinking that I hoped I grabbed the right box of 206 (previous mistake of thinking I got a 2010 206 when it was really a 2009). Once I got home I didn’t wait to open the boxes. I’ll start off with the box of 2010 Topps 206. If you haven’t opened a box of 206 before you are in for a nice surprise. The cards are made of nice thick/durable cardboard with a nice classic card style photo.

So what is inside the box? Well to start there are 7 packs + one extra pack of 6 cards, for a total of 48 cards per blaster. Each pack contains 4 base cards, a tobacco card, and a bronze border base variation card. The cards that are hits to me are scanned and mixed in with the list below.

Odds of a 206 Piedmont Framed Mini Auto 1:49

Overall I was very pleased with this buy from Target! For $20.00 I got 6 cards I’m thrilled about and an AUTO! I will say that this isn’t the first 206 blaster I have purchased from Target, but it is the first one that I have pulled an Auto out of.

Next post will be about the 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter blaster from Target (remember this was the last one on the shelf too,) Stay tuned!

Pre-Blog TTM Sunday - Don Baylor

Since there isn’t any mail on Sundays, and I haven’t got any TTMs in over a month for that matter, I’m going to start a post of past TTMs that I have got before we started this blog.

This is the very first TTM that I got back. Former Rockies’ manager and current Rockies hitting coach, Don Baylor. It only took a little under a week for the Don to send this back, and from what I read he is a very good TTMer. Although I didn’t have him in a Rockies or Orioles uni on a card (the only card that I own of him in an Orioles jersey is already signed), I still like to send out cards to former/current O’s and Rockies players/coaches even if they are in their former teams uni on their cards.

*Side note, the card is in excellent condition, it’s just that my scanner was a little dirty and I’m too lazy to re-scan it…
